Cabo Roig – Gem Of The Orihuela Costa
By: Steve Locke

The fabulous seaside resort of Cabo Roig sits on the Mediterranean coastline like a jewel in a crown. Actually known as “the jewel of the Costa Blanca”, Cabo Roig is best known for its fine sandy beaches, its luxurious detached villas and its prestigious marina. Cabo Roig is possibly the finest resort along this stretch of the Costa Blanca coastline and this fact is reflected in the number of holidaymakers who visit and return year after year.

Cabo Roig originally grew up around an old watchtower (there are many along the Costa Blanca coastline and they were erected to watch out for attacks from Berber pirates during the 14th – 16th Centuries), the tower is now part of a restaurant complex which overlooks the recently modernised marina and is a fine place to take a coffee and look out on the sparkling blue Mediterranean sea. There are some amazing views along the coast to La Manga.

The two primary beaches of Cabo Roig (Cala Caleta and Cala Capitan) are both exceptionally popular and are kept clean, tidy and well maintained. The beach bar at Cala Caleta is a popular place for a tapas snack and even the odd midnight cocktail or two, during the hot summer months and the bar is often open until 4am. But be careful, negotiating your way back to the main road can be tricky by moonlight, especially when a little the worse for a drink or three!

The wonderful cliff-top walk from La Zenia to Cabo Roig is a great way to spend a morning or perhaps an evening whilst visiting the area. This fine walk offers some stunning views of the coastline and on a clear day it is possible to see the resort of La Manga glistening in the distance. During a hot summer’s evening you will also enjoy the cooling sea breeze which makes a pleasant change from the burning sun of a balmy August day.

Cabo Roig the whole of the Costa Blanca, enjoys a wonderful climate and it is claimed to be the most temperate region in the whole of Spain. The area enjoys well over 300 days of sun each year and has an average temperature of approximately 20 degrees centigrade. There is very little rainfall in Cabo Roig and what does fall occurs mostly during the winter months (mostly in November and February). For those who don’t like it too hot, May and October are perhaps the most pleasant months to visit, sun worshippers will hit the beaches of Cabo Roig in July and August and “bake” in temperatures that can reach 40 degrees centigrade.

For food, drinks and entertainment the majority of visitors head for the busy Cabo Roig strip (located on both sides of the N-332 coastal road), here you can find a tremendous variety of bars, restaurants, fast food establishments and shops. During the summer months there is plenty of live entertainment available plus the usual array of karaoke, bingo and quiz nights.

There is plenty to see and do in and around Cabo Roig, and having a rental car would be a great advantage. For golfers there are 3 excellent golf courses within a 5 minute drive and other no more than a half hour away. The go-karts at Punta Prima will be popular with the children and this is a great place to spend an hour or two, they offer cars for all age groups and abilities and even have some mini-carts and mini-quads for the young ones. Be sure to take a trip into the local town of Torrevieja, the busy Friday market is huge and is well worth a visit.

There you have it – Cabo Roig, “the jewel of the Costa Blanca”, the seaside resort with something for everybody. Be sure to visit sometime soon.

Cabo Roig is located on the N-332 coastal road between Torrevieja and Campoamor and is readily accessed from the AP-7 motorway (Dehesa de Campoamor exit or La Zenia exit), it is convenient for both Alicante (45 minutes) and Murcia (20 minutes) airports.
