Torrevieja currently has a population of around 85,000 and draws visitors from many parts of Europe with a contingent of British and German residents. In 1802 salt production moved from La Mata and at that time Torrevieja had a population of around 1500 inhabitants. There is no doubt that the town owes its existence to the salt industry. Visit Torrevieja from the north and you can't help but see the impressive salt lakes - the biggest in Europe - with its characteristic pink colour due to micro-organisms. The two salt lake Laguna de la Mata and Salinas de San Miguel create a healthy micro-climate. The lakes are home to many species of wildlike, incluing a large flock of pink flamingos.

A 2km transportation band takes the salt to the harbour.

The warm climate and high salt concentration gives Torrevieja its 'health-giving' climate and has been recommended by health experts from around the globe.
