El Altet opened on 1967-05-04, replacing the older airdrome La Rabassa that had served Alicante since 1936. The airport took its name from a part of the city of Elx. Alicante is the 7th busiest airport in Spain serving destination up and down the Costa Blanca.
In 2005, the airport served some 8.7 million passengers with around 80% coming from International flights. There are many operators using Alicante airport such as AerLingus, BMI Baby, British Airways, Easyjet, First Choice, FlyBe, FlyGlobespan, Jet 2, Monarch, MyTravel and Thomsonfly. A new terminal, Terminal Two, is currently under construction and due to be completed in 2009. Alicante International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional de Alicante), (IATA: ALC, ICAO: LEAL), originally named El Altet, is the main airport for the regions of Alicante and Murcia in Spain.
