THE GARDEN CLUB OF VEGA BAJA ,,FEBRUARY MEETING
Over a hundred members turned up to hear PETER GREEN, who works as a volunteer for the La Mata –Torrevieja Natural Parks, give a talk on the “Alien Invasion “ in Spain. Not little green men, but little green plants which are getting a firm hold on the open spaces around our area. He told us that tourism, industry and urbanization have all helped to change the environment. The main problem though comes from plants brought into the country. People plant them, then when they get too big, dump them at the side of the road or plant them in an open space. These spread and seeds are scattered so that gradually they take over from the indigenous plants.
Some plants have been brought in to grow as food crops such as POTATOES, TOMATOES, and CORN. Surprisingly, ORANGES and other citrus fruits are not native to this area. Ornamental plants which have gained a firm hold here and are creating problems are PRICKLY PEAR, EVE'S NEEDLE, AGAVE, YUCCA, CARPOBRUTUS (Alicante weed), SPANISH FLAG (lantana), and ACACIA, all of which bring their diseases with them. Peter asked that whenever we prune trees and shrubs, that all the trimmings are sealed in a bag before putting in the refuse bins. Better still, if there is a “green” tip in your area, to please make use of it. (There is one at Catral).
The staff and volunteers of the Natural Parks are always willing to answer questions or to take you on a tour of the areas that they are trying to replant with native species.
They have produced a very informative booklet with lots of photos, so Peter urged everyone to go along and find out what is being done in our area.
Garden Club chairman Val thanked Peter and has promised that members will help to spread the word. Next meeting is on Mon March 1st from 2-4pm at “The Venue” on the Lemon Tree road. All enquiries to VAL on 966 716 527.

SPANGLES PRESS RELEASE
SPANGLES' RAPID GROWTH MEANS RAPID ACTION!
Spangles Ladies Harmony Chorus celebrated their fifth anniversary in December 2009. Having started with just five ladies, Spangles now has 44 active members and continues to attract new ladies to the chorus every week. Their success, however, means that they have now outgrown the risers that they stand on to rehearse and to perform and they need to buy some bigger, new ones from the UK, which will cost in the region of 7,000 €
With this in mind, they have launched a big fundraising campaign for 2010, so that they can place their order by Christmas this year and are organising many fun events throughout the year, from a Car Treasure Hunt to shows with ABBA Elite and The Everlys in Los Alcázares. A full events list can be found on their website: www.spangleschorus.com or you can call 968 432 525/968 334 527 for full details if you would like to take part.
The Car Treasure Hunt is the first major event and will leave Centro Municipal Las Claras, Los Narejos at 11.00 am on Sunday, 21 March, ending with a menu del dia at a local Spanish restaurant. Entry is just 3€ per person and the prize is a menu del dia for two.
They are also looking for sponsorship – you can sponsor a riser step for just 100 € and a plaque with your name or that of a loved one will be added to that riser. Alternatively, you can donate online at http://www.spangleschorus.com/?page_id=1423 . They are also adding an Auction Page to the website, where members of the public can sell good quality items and donate 10% of the proceeds to Spangles. If you have something you would like to auction, contact the above numbers or email: spangleschorus@gmail.com
“We've got lots of ideas for fundraising” says Musical Director, Gail Grainger “And, after just three weeks, we've already raised over 300 € just from selling oranges, and home-made cakes and preserves at our weekly rehearsals. We have such an enthusiastic chorus and with the public on our side, we're optimistic that we can achieve our target by the end of 2010.”
If you're looking to make new friends and enjoy singing, why not visit Spangles when they rehearse at Las Claras? They meet every Thursday from 10.30am to 1.00pm. Please call Lyn on 968432525 or Anthea on 968334527 to book Spangles or to find out how to join or visit the website: www.spangleschorus.com.

TORREVIEJA MEETING AMPLIFIED
The public meeting scheduled for 17th March at 18.00h in Torrevieja's 'VIRGEN DEL CARMEN' cultural centre concerning the rights of British expat residents to vote in the UK general election has now been amplified to include information concerning the voting rights of non Spaniards in the MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS next spring.
As you are no doubt aware, it is not sufficient to be regsitered on the mucnipal padron (although this is a requirement), non-Spanish residentes must actually SOLICIT their right to vote. The meeting on 17th therefore will be extended to include an explanation of the voting rights of expats in the MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS as well as the UK general election.
The meeting will be addressed by the Mayor of Torrebvieja, Don. Pedro Hernandez Mateo.

PILAR CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH
In 2002 four English speaking people started to attend meetings of the local Spanish Evangelical church in Pilar. The church met in a small, hot garage and there was no translation of the Spanish service into English. In 2004 the church moved into a new building in Calle Integracion and with the support of other English speakers, it was decided to start a separate English speaking service. The congregation numbered approximately ten people and met in the morning, whilst the Spanish church met in the evening.
Various people assumed leadership responsibilities until on 1st August 2009 the church called a pastor, Rev. Eddie Martens, who was inducted in September 2009.
The church has now moved into larger premises as from March 2010 at Calle Canalejas 3, (opposite the Pilar Cinema), Pilar de la Horadada, 03190. There is now a membership of approximately forty people, plus those who join us as they arrive for holidays, some very short term holidays others staying for a matter of months.
Pilar Christian Community Church is an interdenominational church; we welcome people from every other Christian tradition, having amongst us people from Anglican, Methodist, Pentecostal, Congregational, Baptist and Free Evangelical traditions. We particularly welcome those, who have not regularly attended any church before.
Our Sunday morning service at 11 A.M. is a relaxed and lively affair, encouraging congregational participation and there is a time of fellowship afterwards, when people are encouraged to mix over a cup of tea and refreshments.
There is a mid-week meeting at 5 P.M. on Thursdays and there are house groups at different locations during the week. Come and join us for any service and be blessed.
Thank you on behalf of Pilar Christian Community Church

TORRE LADIES FALL TO HEAVY DEFEAT
Torre Ladies took on a high flying Aspe side on unfamiliar territory this Sunday, as the league made the ladies play their home game on the Montesinos pitch as a result of fans running on the pitch on their last home game. Aspe took only a few minutes to show how far superior they were and at times passed the ball around the Torre girls as if they weren't there.
There wasn't much we could comment on from our girls on the first half performance and we went in 0 – 5 down at half time. The second half showed our girls coming out with a bit of fighting spirit and for the first 10 minutes of the half Torre played some slick passing moves of their own that torn the defence of Aspe apart. The first goal came with a good patience passing move from the back right up the pitch with Sam smashing in a great shoot from the outside right corner of the box . The second come a few moments after that when again a good passing move ending with Maria getting brought down in the box.
Jessi calmly put the penalty away. 2 – 5 game on. It wasn't to be the great come back though as Aspe recovered well and went on to dominate the game again and also went on the score 3 more goals. If Torry are to survive in this league they will all have to pull together and try to play the way a lot of us on the stands know they can instead of playing for themselves. Too much individual performances and not enough team effort.
Torre are now awaiting the date and venue for the second half that still needs to be played against Elda. For more information please see our club website HYPERLINK "http://www.fctorreviejafemenino.web.officelive.com/"www.fctorreviejafemenino.web.officelive.com Team Sponsor Europa Network
